The Acid Rock of England And The Second Wave
The Beatles was one of the earliest bands that played with acid. In the parts of the middle and last music of them, you can feel the large part of acid obviously. In< Rubber Soul>, < Revolver>, <Sgt Pepper lonely Heart’s Club Band>, you can see it clearly. The acid of The Beatles always makes from the technique of recording canopy, be a blurred feeling. Here still have some early acid band that seldom people know. Yardbirds, the nucleus of that band was three guitarists: Eric Clapton; Jimmy Page; Jeff Beck. Though this band hadn’t got a long time, the music of them still had a feeling which ghostlike and illusional. You can say that band is the beginner of the acid rock in England.
At that time, another band played acid is that famous Rolling Stone. They were not an acid rock band, but the album of them in 1967<Their Satanic Majesties Request> involved many acid parts. Though somebody said that album was just wanted to against with <Sgt Pepper> from The Beatles, but it made the traditional style of Rolling Stone. If you say the advantage of <Sgt Pepper> was the technique of recording, then the advantage of < Their Satanic Majesties Request > was the feeling which secretly hallucinatory. The songs in that album: <She’s a rainbow>, <2000 light years> were all the good songs of acid.
Another part of the acid rock of England is some bands in the second wave of Britain. If you say Beatles, Rolling Stone who cleared away the music of America were the first wave of Britain. Then Hollies, Move, Small Faces, Traffic, Nice, Pink Floyd, Soft Machine, Procol Harum were the second wave of Britain. At that time drug was a very popular thing, they all had a little or much infected with acid. That became a tide of that time. They had different characteristic of playing acid. For example Traffic, they used a lot change of noise to make an acid feeling. The first album <Mr. Fantasy> was full of acid. Nice changed the classic music into acid music. The best acid album of them was <The Thoughts of Emerlist Davejack>. They influenced a lot by classic music, after that band the members are all played art rock.
That time acid was widespread and there was a new kind of acid music found: Freak Beat. That kind of music used a lot of rhythm of sitar and electric chime and the blurred sound of guitar to make a special environment. Hollies was the best band of that kind. Two albums in 1967 of them <Evolution>, <Butterfly> were the leader of Freak Beat. The advantage of Procol Harum was organ. Small faces walked along the way that was hard acid rock. Another most important acid band was Pink Floyd. The focus of that band was Syd Barret. The earliest kind of them was also acid rock. They tried many many different ways to play acid, especially the light in the live of them, which really made an enviourment full of acid. The representative work of them was the first album <The Piper at the Gates of Dawn>; the cover of that album just superimposed the heads of the members. That was also the product after acid.
Each acid band has a focus member; the style of band is always controls by the consciousness of that focus people. The focus of Traffic was Dave Mason; the focus of Nice was David O’list; the leader of Hollies was Graham Nash; Matthew Fisher was the core of Procol Harum; the initiator of Pink Floyd was Syd Barret… These people just control the style of their bands, if they leave that band, you can’t say that’s an acid band any more. For Pink Floyd, the acid album of them was only the first. Before they recorded their second album, Syd Barret left the band, the focus changed to Roger Waters. The style of them also changed from acid to innovative art rock. So some extreme fans of Pink Floyd said the real album of Pink Floyd was only the first one. After Syd left, Pink Floyd had already disappeared, but they still had success in the rest time. Other way, Hollies and Procol Harum did nothing in their late time. After Fisher left Procol Harum, they only got some common marks and lack of acid. Nash left Hollies in 1968, and then Hollies became a rubbish pop band. When O’List in Nice, their music was just like a fairyland. But when he left, the style of band was much different from used. From upstairs, we can see that almost all the bands in England didn’t have a long time life, they can’t keep their styles for a long time. That’s also one reason that the government of Britain make a law of fobit drug.
At that time in England, there were so many bands that played acid or just touched a little. Here example some bands which seldom people know: Kaleidoscope, Herd, Tomorrow, Family, Moody Blues, Nirvana, and Zombies…
At the end of 80’s and the beginning of 90’s, there was a small wave of acid happen in England again. Most of these bands are new wave, the famous of them are: The Stone Roses, Happy Mondays, Ride… But you can’t find these fantastic feeling from bands in 60’s. First, the acid rock in 90’s hasn’t got that free background of 60’s. The acid perception is forced and man-made. Then from the depth and awareness, it’s far from the power of vibrate in 60’s, the skill of music also worse than 60’s. Anyway, acid rock in England belonged to 60’s.
