ALBERTO Korda, the photographer whose picture of Enesto "Che" Guevera became one of the best-known images of the last century, died on Friday in Paris of a heart attack. He was 72.
The image of Guevera waering a military beret over flowing curls and gazing pensively took on an icon status of heroism and perseverance. The picture was on posters and T-shirt, key rings, caos and even socks.
Guevera was born to an Argentine family living in the backwoods in 1928. He graduated as a doctor in 1953. But he refused his bright future as a doctor in Argentina. He believed that revolution was the only way to gain equality in Latin America.
After staying in Venezuela and Guatemala undergoing the revolution, he was sent to Mexico in 1954. He met Fidel Castro, who urged him to participate in the Cuban revolution. He began to train the Cubans for war and became the leader of the guerrillas, but was thrown in jail.
On March 4, 1960, Korda was covering a memorial service for 136 people killed in the explosion fo a munitions ship in the Havana harbour. Castro was delivering a scathing attack against the United States, blaming Washington, for the blast.
Guevera, then a minister in the Cuban goverment, showed up briefly, and Korda captured his image in just two frames.
Seven years later, when Guevera, then operating in Bolivia, was captured by soldiers and killed, he instantly became a martyr to the revolution. Almost instantly, Korda's picture started showing up in Europe.
